Bad news for small toy companies

So I was reading on Cool Mom Picks this morning about an act that has been passed that will require of extensive testing of all consumer items -- toys, clothes, etc -- for children under the age of 12. This is in response to all the issues awhile back with the toys from China that had high levels of lead.

While in theory it sounds like a good idea -- I mean, certainly, I want things that Ella wears and plays with and consumes to be safe -- it's bad news for small toy companies, people who make homemade toys, because most of these companies won't be able to afford the exorbitant fees to have their toys tested and labeled (something along the lines of $4000 per item). This won't just impact toy makers in the US, but also in Canada and Europe as well.

This is such a shame. So many peoples' livelihoods will be impacted by this, and awesome handmade toys like the ones you can find on Etsy will no longer be available.

Help stop this from happening. Join the Handmade Toy Alliance, and send an email (like this one) to your senators and congress people. And if you know anyone else who has a kid, make sure they're aware of this as well.
